SOTA Toys' canceled Micronauts-Evolution project was a modern collector revival developed after the Palisades era. It began as a 6-inch figure concept, reached sculpt/prototype development on several characters, and later shifted toward a more classic 3¾-inch approach before the line was shelved.
Line Summary
Company: SOTA Toys, led during development by Jerry Macaluso.
Announced era: 2005, with Toy Fair 2006 material still showing SOTA trying to move the project forward.
Original plan: A modern 6-inch collector line using more sculpt detail than a small 3¾-inch body could carry.
Later plan: By Toy Fair 2006, SOTA was exploring a return to 3¾-inch scale with standardized peg sizes so accessories could interchange.
Status: Canceled before normal retail release. These are prototype/development subjects, not released production toys.
Prototype / Flagship Villain
Baron Karza
Planned as the headline armored villain. Development notes describe removable parts, opening panels, interchangeable accessories, heavy paint detailing, shoulder-hinging jetpacks that could read as blasters, wings, a chainmail-style cape, sword, alternate hands, and a wrist-swappable spiked mace.
Prototype / Heroic Armored Force
Space Glider
SOTA treated Space Glider less as one individual and more like a three-color armored force, echoing the red, blue, and green vintage releases. The plan called for all three colors in the same case assortments, each with slightly different accessories, plus alternate helmet and bare chrome-style head ideas.
Prototype / Monster Character
Lobros
Lobros was the monster entry of the proposed group. The concept included an opening brain panel and a waist-splitting feature so the upper body could swap onto a crab-like lower body, making the character more creature-system than simple remake.
Planned Feature / Later Release Idea
Karza Centaur Build
OAFE's development account says Karza was also planned to gain a waist-splitting/centaur-style feature, but not until a later release. This kept the magnetic-horse legacy in the concept without confirming a normal first-wave Andromeda retail item.
Design and Sculpting Notes
Jerry Macaluso described the project as a chance to create new Micronauts rather than simply repeat the vintage toys after the Palisades era.
Main designers credited in the OAFE account include Randy Queen, Sandy Collora, and Jerry Macaluso, with sculpting work involving Will Harbottle, Jon Stevens, Aaron McNaught, and others.
Baron Karza and Space Glider were designed by Randy Queen; Space Glider was sculpted by Will Harbottle.
Lobros was designed by Sandy Collora, fitting the monster/creature slot after the robot and soldier-style figures.
Why It Did Not Reach Stores
The project was put on ice during a rights dispute involving Takara's claim around Micronauts/Microman ownership.
SOTA also faced retailer resistance because the prior Palisades Micronauts revival had shipped with problems and weak sales, making buyers cautious about another Micronauts line.
Potential outlets such as Suncoast/Sam Goody became risky as retail conditions worsened, and Macaluso later sold SOTA; the new owners did not continue championing the Micronauts project.
